Cooper University Health Care COVID-19 (2019-CoV) Info

There are currently NO suspect, probable and/or confirmed cases of COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) at any CUHC location.  

A High Consequence Infectious Disease Incident Management Team, (HCID IMT), made up of elements of Disaster Medicine, Infectious Disease, Infection Prevention and other clinical and non-clinical experts from the Emergency Management Committee has been activated to monitor and assist CUHC as requested.

COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) Case Definitions/Immediate Actions

No vaccine or specific treatment for COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) infection is available; care is supportive. The criteria for a COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) person under investigation (PUI) are subject to change and are expected to change in the coming days, weeks, months as additional information becomes known:

1. Current Criteria to Guide Evaluation of PUI for COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) 
Fever (may not always be present) 
Clinical features of lower respiratory illness (cough, difficult breathing) 
     o Any person, including health care workers, who has had close contact with a laboratory confirmed COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) patient within 14 days of symptom onset 
     o A history of travel from Hubei Province, China within 14 days of symptom onset 
     o A history of travel from mainland China within 14 days of symptom onset 

NOTE: CDC has added  history of travel from South Korea within 14 days of symptom onset (WARNING) from Japan or Italy within 14 days of symptom onset (ALERT) and history of travel from Hong Kong or Iran within 14 days of symptom onset (Watch)  to their Travel Notices. 25FEB2020

Please take the same precautions/actions with these patients, especially by contacting the HCID IMT, and we will engage the Department of Health, NJDOH and/or CDC for further direction relative to "Official PUI status from the Authority Having Jurisdiction"

2. Patients who meet the PUI criteria should be reported immediately to the CUHC HCID IMT via 1-856-968-7900 (The CUHC HCID IMT will coordinate notification of the Health Department/s having jurisdiction.)

3. Interim Healthcare Infection Prevention and Control Recommendations 
PUIs for COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) should be asked to wear a surgical mask and evaluated in a private room with the door closed, ideally in an airborne infection isolation room if available. Healthcare personnel should use standard precautions, contact precautions, airborne precautions, and eye protection (e.g., goggles or a face shield). 

4. PUIs for COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) do not require admission to a biocontainment unit. Unless clinically indicated, PUIs do not require hospital admission. Recommendations for home care are available on the CDC website. This will be coordinated with the Health Department having jurisdiction.
