FACILITY ALERT (Fire/Smoke) formally Code Red

Actions to take if it occurs on your unit 

Call x644 to report the fire (911 if outside hospital)
Rescue- Rescue those in danger
Alarm- Pull the alarm
Confine- Confine the fire by closing doors
Extinguish- Use an extinguisher, if the fire is small, (less than 3' x 3') and you are trained to do so.

Critical Information/Points to Remember

Location of fire extinguishers on unit/department
Fire alarm pull box locations on unit/department
Evacuation routes which includes the immediate horizontal/ relocation/safe haven area for your unit/department
Priorities are room/area on fire and all within that smoke/fire corridor/wing>room/area above fire>room/area below fire once suppression efforts start
Among priorities is clearing hallway beds and items in hallways to ensure safe egress
Deciding on a Rally Point and account for all staff, employees, patients and visitors 
Always follow the direction of Security and/or the Fire Department during a Fire/Smoke/Alarm incident/event

To Properly Operate a Fire Extinguisher (P.A.S.S.)

Pull out the locking pin
Aim at the base of the fire
Squeeze the operation levers together
Sweep the nozzle at the base of the fire in a side to side motion
All areas of CUHC utilize ABC type extinguishers, (except the OR's & MRI*), which are safe for all types of fires that may occur at a CUHC occupancy
(NOTE: *OR's and MRI possess a sterile water mist extinguisher inside the OR for protection against fire's that may occur during certain procedures and the units inside the MRI suites are designed for safe use in those areas as well.  Those personnel have special training in their appropriate use.)
